Founded by Trabzon Deputy Mustafa Reşit Tarakçıoğlu and 28 of his colleagues, Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) was established on May 20, 1955 with Law No. 6594 and became the first university established outside of Istanbul and Ankara.
Continuing its development, KTÜ acquired the staff of the Earth Sciences and Medical Faculties with Law No. 1659 dated January 4, 1973. After the Higher Education Law No. 2547 came into force in 1981, KTÜ continued to grow by opening new faculties and departments.
Today, KTÜ offers 78 undergraduate and 34 associate degree programs in 12 faculties, 1 college and 8 vocational schools. In addition, there are 80 graduate and 57 doctoral programs in 6 institutes. With its strong academic staff, 31,000 students and more than 248,000 graduates, KTÜ is one of the leading universities in Turkey.
