The establishment and development of Hacettepe University is quite comprehensive. This process began with the founding of the Department of Child Health on February 2, 1954, by Prof. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Ankara University. In 1957, Hacettepe Children's Hospital was opened, and in 1958, the Hacettepe Institute of Child Health started its educational, teaching, research, and public service activities. In 1961, the Hacettepe School of Health Sciences was established within the institute, providing education in nursing, medical technology, physical therapy, and rehabilitation.
In 1963, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was established, making Hacettepe the second medical faculty in Ankara and the fourth in Turkey. In the same year, the School of Dentistry was also founded. Following the establishment of the Hacettepe Science Center in 1965, the Hacettepe Medical Center and its affiliated hospital were inaugurated in 1966. On July 8, 1967, Hacettepe University was officially established, and the units organized up to that point were affiliated with the university. During this period, the faculties of Medicine, Health Sciences, Science, and Social Sciences began their educational activities.
Today, Hacettepe University continues its educational, research, and community service activities as one of Turkey's leading universities with 16 faculties, 15 institutes, 4 vocational schools, 2 schools, 1 conservatory, and 98 research and application centers. With tens of thousands of students, alumni, and staff, the university fosters a sense of pride in being part of Hacettepe. Contributing significantly to the fields of science, technology, and art, Hacettepe University stands out as one of Turkey's prestigious educational institutions. Since its establishment, the university has seen many rectors, with the current rector being Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cahit Güran. Hacettepe University, with its deep-rooted history and strong academic structure, remains a prominent educational institution in Turkey.
