Middle East Technical University (METU) was founded on November 15, 1956 under the name of "Middle East Institute of Technology" with the aim of contributing to the development of Turkey and Middle Eastern countries, especially in the fields of natural sciences and social sciences.
METU has brought many innovations to the Turkish higher education system and has been a pioneer in modern education. After spending its first years in a small building belonging to the Retirement Fund in Kızılay and in the barracks behind the TBMM, the university moved to its current location in 1963. METU currently offers 41 undergraduate programs in five faculties.
Within METU, 107 master's and 69 doctoral programs are conducted in the Institutes of Science, Social Sciences, Informatics, Applied Mathematics and Marine Sciences. The Institute of Marine Sciences operates in İçel-Erdemli. The language of education at METU is English, and preparatory class students receive English education from the School of Foreign Languages.
METU has become one of the leading institutions in Turkey since its establishment. There are approximately 791 faculty members (professors, associate professors, assistant professors), 225 lecturers, 1,273 research assistants and more than 28,000 students. The total number of graduates is over 120,000.
