Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), founded in 1975 with the aim of bringing a new perspective to the economic, cultural and social life of the Black Sea Region and contributing to the region, is a respected state university.
The university has gone beyond its founding mission throughout its 48-year history and has become a large family serving 51,199 students with 2,338 academicians and 2,500 administrative staff.
With its goal of becoming a research university and its mission of internationalization, it has positioned itself as one of the most important research and education institutions in Turkey. The university takes its name from Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's arrival in Samsun on May 19, 1919, which is considered the beginning of the National Struggle. Ondokuz Mayıs University has 20 faculties, 1 college, 14 vocational colleges, 3 institutes, 1 conservatory and 27 application research centers.
The university is making significant efforts towards internationalization and has achieved the success of being one of the top 5 universities in Turkey with the highest number of international students with 4,983 students from 108 different countries. In this way, it is steadily progressing towards its goal of becoming an international university.
The university also has campuses in the city center, by the sea, the Mustafa Kemal Güneşdoğdu Campus in Çarşamba district and the Bafra Campus in Bafra district. Apart from these campuses, there are 9 vocational schools (Vocational Schools) located in various districts of the city.
