Gaziantep University, named after the commercial and industrial center of Gaziantep province, began its educational journey in 1973 with the establishment of the Mechanical Engineering Department under the METU Faculty of Engineering. In 1974, with the addition of the Electrical Engineering Department, these two departments transformed into the Gaziantep Faculty of Engineering. In the same year, the Departments of Basic Sciences and Languages were established, and in 1977, the Applied Chemistry Department was added to the faculty. The Civil Engineering Department was established in 1981, and in 1982, the Applied Chemistry Department was transformed into the Food Engineering Department, while the Basic Sciences Department was transformed into the Physics Engineering Department.
On June 27, 1987, with the addition of various newly established faculties and higher schools to the Faculty of Engineering, Gaziantep University gained its legal entity status by law number 3389.
Gaziantep University is advancing with firm steps towards becoming a world university with its strong academic staff, physical infrastructure, and social and cultural facilities. It stands out with projects that set an example for other universities in Turkey, such as the Internship Education Model, University-Industry Collaboration, and Social Responsibility Projects.
Gaziantep University is an international university that leads its region in scientific and artistic fields and offers education in three languages (Turkish, English, Arabic) with faculties established in secure regions of Syria.
At the university, the language of instruction is English in the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Architecture, and Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences. The Faculty of Medicine offers programs in both Turkish and English. The Faculty of Theology has mandatory Arabic classes, and the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences offers optional preparatory classes. Additionally, 12 programs are taught in Arabic, making it the only university in Turkey providing education in three languages.
Gaziantep University comprises 20 faculties, 5 institutes, 2 higher schools, and 11 vocational schools. As of 2019, the total number of departments and programs at the university has reached 146.
