Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), established in 1975 with the aim of bringing a new perspective to the economic, cultural, and social life of the Black Sea Region and contributing to the region, is a prestigious state university. Over its 48-year history, our university has evolved beyond its founding mission and has become a large family serving 51,199 students with 2,338 academicians and 2,500 administrative staff today. With the goal of becoming a research university and its mission of internationalization, it has positioned itself as one of Turkey's most prominent research and educational institutions. The university takes its name from the date recognized as the beginning of the National Struggle, the arrival of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Samsun on May 19, 1919. Ondokuz Mayıs University has 20 faculties, 1 college, 14 vocational schools, 3 institutes, 1 conservatory, and 27 application research centers.
The university is making significant efforts towards internationalization and has achieved success in being one of the top 5 universities in Turkey with the highest number of international students, with 4,983 students from 108 different countries. In this way, it is progressing steadily towards its goal of becoming an international university.
Additionally, the university has campuses located in the city center, by the sea, in Çarşamba district as Mustafa Kemal Güneşdoğdu Campus, and in Bafra district as Bafra Campus. Apart from these campuses, there are 9 vocational schools (MYOs) located in various districts of the city.
