Named after the eminent Turkish scholar Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, known as the "Universal Genius" for his contributions to medicine, pharmacy, astronomy, mathematics, physics, geography, and history, Biruni University was established as a foundation university. As of the 2014-2015 academic year, Biruni University commenced its academic activities with a specialization in health sciences, comprising six faculties and one vocational school.
Biruni University was established in accordance with Article 13 of Law No. 6525, which was adopted on February 20, 2014, and published in the Official Gazette on February 27, 2014, issue number 28926. It was founded under Additional Article 156 of the Higher Education Institutions Organization Law No. 2809, dated March 28, 1983.
