While the affordability of student life in Turkey depends on individual lifestyle choices and preferences, it is generally considered cost-effective. This post aims to address potential queries regarding the fundamental expenses associated with being an international student in the country.
Accomodation
The monthly budget required for accommodation in Turkey can range from 215 TL to 2500 TL, depending on the type of accommodation chosen. Public dormitories, university dormitories, private dormitories, and rental apartments each come with varying costs. Dormitory fees are typically paid on a monthly basis, and you are not obligated to pay during the summer months when you are not using the dormitory. On the other hand, rental apartments require monthly rent payments throughout the year.
Both dormitories and rental apartments often require an initial deposit upon check-in. The specific amount of this deposit can vary based on the monthly payment of the dormitory or the monthly rent of the apartment.
For more detailed information about accommodation options, you can visit the Accommodation Page or consult the relevant office at the university you plan to attend.
Insurance and Health Expenses
The cost of health insurance for international students in Turkey ranges from 300 TL to 800 TL per year when opting for private companies. These private insurance plans grant access to complimentary healthcare services at affiliated hospitals, subject to the terms outlined in the policy. It is crucial to secure an English copy of your policy and thoroughly review the pertinent articles.
Alternatively, the General Health Insurance payment stands at 1059 TL per year as of 2020. This insurance covers free healthcare services at all public hospitals. However, in private hospitals, you may be required to make varying co-payment contributions.
Daily Expenses
Student discounts are offered at cinemas, theatres, museums, public transportation, some bookstores and restaurants. Let us remind you that Turkish Airlines also offers attractive discounts and campaigns for students.
